Bus Safety
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS
For approximately 4000 Greenbrier County students, the school day will begin and end with a trip on a school bus. Following these basic bus safety tips will help ensure that our most precious cargo is delivered to and from school safely.
Accidents often happen when students are in a hurry. Allow enough time to get to the bus stop five minutes before the bus arrives.
When walking to your bus stop, use sidewalks. If there are no side
walks, walk on the left side facing traffic and stay as far from the side of the road as possible.
Use a backpack or tote to carry items you are taking to school or carrying home.
Remove drawstrings, toggles and/or key chains from clothing or the outside of backpacks as they can get caught on handrails or exit doors and cause injury.
When waiting for your bus, stay away from traffic. Do not play or roughhouse in the street.
Never walk behind the bus and stay away from the bus’ rear wheels at all times.
Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus.
Upon boarding the bus, find a seat, sit down and keep aisles clear of books or bags.
Never put your head, arms or hands out of the window.
Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat.
Take 10 GIANT steps away from the bus when exiting—make sure the driver can see you.
Look both ways, wait for a thumbs up signal from the driver, and look both ways again before crossing the road.
Keep away from the bus if you drop or forget something.
